GOVERNMENT MUST SANCTION ZOOMLION
AFAG over the years have urged government to support
indigenous businesses in their quest to expand into the
international market. It comes as a shock to us, the
World Bank group announcement debarring Ghana’s Zoomlion
for two years because of its misconduct of bribing
government officials in order to secure a contract. This
is a serious embarrassment to Ghana and a huge stumbling
block to other Ghanaian businesses in the international
arena. Indeed a black spot on the image of corporate
Ghana.
By this act, how would the World Bank group, and other
international banks view bids from Ghanaian businesses?
In our opinion, government should investigate and
possibly sanction Zoomlion in order to protect the
‘Corporate Ghana Brand’. AFAG is concerned about the
medium to long-term repercussion of zoomlion’s ill
action on Ghanaian businesses. In this highly
competitive corporate world, such negative acts should
not be treated with kid gloves. AFAG urges the
government to seriously consider enacting a Foreign
Corrupt Practices Act to govern the conduct of Ghanaian
business globally.
God bless Ghana
