Accra, June 1, Ghanadot - Information
reaching the Ghanadot office in Accra, Ghana's capital town
shows that a joint Military cum police patrol team led to the
arrest of 14 people linked to last Sunday's renewed violent
skirmishes which caused the death of
three persons in Bawku, a Municipal capital in the Upper East
Region of Ghana.
The 14 people were being screened and those found to have been
involved in igniting the feuding conflict would be arraigned
before court in the course of the year.
The current incident occurred only two days after the President
of Ghana, President John.Evans.Atta Mills held separate meetings
with the two feuding sides, the Kussasi and Mamprusi, in
Bolgatanga, the Upper East Regional capital during his maiden
visit to the region since he assumed high office of the land.
At a durbar held in honour of the president where both leaders
of the sides met,
the president pleaded vehemently with them to tell their
people to give peace a chance. The Kussasi side was represented
by the Chief of Bawku, Naba Abugrago Azoka II, and the Mamprusi
side by Alhaji Akhalifa.
The latest incident started last Sunday at about 16: 15 pm, when
one Felix Asibi, believed to be a driver was shot dead. This was
when he allegedly attempted to make a telephone call upon
spotting some men who were allegedly raiding
cattle from the cattle market in Bawku.
Felix Asibi death was described by the police as
a perfect arm robbery. However, the
ensuing killing of Ibrahim Sulemana
and Ali Abugri was said to have been the real
link with the conflict.
In the ensuing clashes, three vehicles were set
ablaze.
Meanwhile, the 14 people described by the police as combatants
also burnt down an office complex belonging to the Ghana
Immigration Service at Kulmako, a surburb of Bawku.
The police and the military also retrieved one AK47 raffle and
ammunitions from the combatants.
According to the police at Bawku, the latest incident was fueled
by the release of some suspects who allegedly set a house on
fire leading to the death of a pregnant woman some few months
back.
They said the release of these suspects ignited jubilations in
the Bawku Township last Friday, and was accompanied by
spontaneous gunshots in the volatile municipality.
The Ghanadot has learnt that the Upper East Regional Minister,
Mr. Mark Woyongo, who is also the Chairman of the Regional
Security Council (REGSEC) led members of the council to Bawku
yesterday to bring the situation under control.
