 UCC to host international science conference

Cape Coast, Nov 13, Ghanadot/GNA - The University of Cape Coast (UCC) would from November 19 to 28, host an International Conference aimed at among others, promoting international collaboration for Africans into optics and laser in medical and environmental research in tropical Africa.


About 70 scientists, physicians, engineers, technologists and professionals operating in the field of modern optics, lasers, medicine and environmental monitoring, as well as graduate students from Africa, Europe, America, Asia and Australia, are expected to attend the conference.


The theme for conference is "Optics and Lasers in Medicine and Environmental Monitoring for Sustainable Development (OPTOLASERMED 2007)".


They would be sharing common ideas and discussing new developments in the area of lasers in medicine and environmental monitoring, and on key topics like "optical spectroscopic techniques and sensors in environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics and therapeutics", "laser technologies in medicine and biophotonics" and "laser sources and techniques."

 

According to Professor Paul Buah-Bassuah, of the Laser and Fibre Optics Centre (LAFOC) of the UCC, the local organizer of the conference, the expected outputs of the conference include fostering stronger cooperation among medical practitioners, scientists and engineers in industry, hospitals and universities in the use of laser equipment.


Ghana's Ministers of Health and Education, Science and Sports are expected to address the conference, which is being organized in collaboration with the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the International Commission for Optics (ICO), the International Society on Optics within Life Sciences (OWLS), the Optical Society of America (OSA) and the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).
