Swedruman Traditional fines family for lavish funeral
Agona Swedru, March 20, GNA - The Swedruman Traditional
Council in the Central Region
reminding citizens that the ban on extravagant
funerals was still in force, fined a family that flouted the
rule,
last week, some GH¢200.00.
The Council also reminded citizens that the ban on long
funeral
corteges through its principal streets with loud music and
sirens
remained in force.
Nana Asiedu Kobina Botwe II, Chief of Swedru, who announced
this
at the Council's weekly meeting, on Thursday, warned that
any person who would flout these
bye-laws would be severely dealt with.
He said the reminder followed the outrageous behaviour
displayed
by some celebrants last Friday, adding that the
representatives of the bereaved
family that were summoned before the Council would
additionally pay three bottles of schnapps and a sheep.
The Chief of Swedru said the Council would also punish the
young
men those young men in that funeral who paraded the streets
in
speeding and horn-tooting vehicles and those drove around
playing loud music.
"The Council would also not entertain the practice of
bereaved
families organising large out-door parties with loud music
and
expensive foods for fixing the dates of funerals and burials
for their
loved ones," he stressed.
He said stiffer punishments would be imposed on future
offers and
urged heads of families in the Agona Swedru Municipality to
cooperate to save the excesses
incurred on funerals and to maintain peace and
order at all times.
