New housing schemes for Tema Metropolis
Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot
Plans are far advanced for the Tema Development Corporation
(TDC) to introduce new housing schemes to give a facelift to
some of the old communities in the Tema Metropolis.
This is because the housing schemes in those communities are
no longer attractive and therefore there was the need for
the Corporation to come up with new schemes that are
standard.
According to him, some technical committees have already
been set up by the Corporation to come up with designs that
would meet the kind of standards they want adding that in
the next two to three years people would begin to see the
new face of those communities.
Mr. Abbey made the disclosure this during a tour of ongoing
and abandoned properties of the Corporation by the Deputy
Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Dr. Hannah
Bissiw in Tema.
The Deputy Minister and her entourage first port of call was
the TDC Conference Center located at Tema Community Six (6),
near the Hotel Joe Carl which was discarded somewhere in
2000 after about 70 % of work had been done completed.
From there, they continued to the defunct Tema Meridian
Hotel area, where a number of development works were ongoing
before continuing to inspect work so far done at the new
site for Community 25 on the western side of the Tema –
Aflao highway, which is about 60 per cent developed.
Speaking to some journalists, the acting Managing Director (MD)of
the Tema Development Corporation, Mr. Joe Abbey hinted that
the new housing scheme is expected to start from Communities
One (1), Two (2) and Four (4), especially the Kaiser flat
area.
He denied that the responsibility of TDC and the Tema
Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) overlaps because each of the two
establishments has its own mandate and works accordingly.
He pointed out that TDC has qualified personnel who are
ready to move into action to change the face of Tema and
called for cooperation among residents and staff of the
Corporation.
The Dr. Hannah Bissiw expressed worry that the TDC
Conference Center which when completed could have racked in
some income for the Corporation had been abandoned for such
a long time.
She disclosed that the Water Resources, Works and Housing
ministry was going to operate an open door policy to allow
all Ghanaians to have access to the Ministry to ensure
speedy development.
On her assessment of the performance of TDC, Mrs. Bissiw
explained that since the NDC just got into office, they are
now studying the situation on the ground and therefore
judging them would not be appropriate.
She however charged staff of the Corporation of the rally
solidly behind the acting MD to ensure that together they
achieve their goal of developing Tema and making it the
model city it once was.
