Use Fasting Period to settle disputes-Imam Iddrisu
By Masahudu Ankiilu Kunateh, Ghanadot

Accra, Aug 30, Ghanadot - An Islamic Scholar, Imam Iddrisu Alhassan Iddrisu has passionately appealed to Muslims in Ghana to use the ongoing fasting period to settle disputes among themselves rather fomenting troubles in the country.

Imam Alhassan Iddrisu made the appeal in Accra over the weekend when Ghanadot sought his biews on the skirmishes which broke out recently at the Konkomba Market in Accra, where four persons lost their lives and several people were injured at the Konkomba Market.

Imam Iddrisu Alhassan Iddrisu, who is a former chief Imam of the Akuofo Hall of the University Ghana further appealed to Muslims who are living around the Agbogloshie and its environs to give peace a chance.

Statistics shows that about 90% of the people living in the area are Muslims. Why Muslims should fight especially in the month that is regarded as a Holy Month, Imam Iddrisu Alhassan asked.

He added that even the preceding month, Shaban, was a holy month and Imam Iddrisu Alhassan urged Muslims to reconcile among themselves as well as among non-Muslims.

Imam Iddrisu Alhassan admonished Muslims that “This month is a Holy month and it is a month in which the Holy Quoran was revealed to be guidance to mankind” and therefore Muslims should channel their resources to broker peace in the country.

He urged Muslims to use the Month of Ramadan to forgive one another and also refrain from bad deeds.

Imam Iddrisu Alhassan observed “Anger is a strong feeling of displeasure or hostility in order to prevent the occurrence of harm or seeking revenge against a person who caused you harm. Anger leads to many prohibited acts such as murder, causing physical harm, oppression and transgression. It can also lead to utterance of obscene words, insulting and defamation. None of these by-products (end products?) of anger is befitting for a Muslim not to talk of the one who is observing the fast of Ramadan”.

The fast of Ramadan or any fast for that matter which is to achieve the objective of spiritual training and development of the soul and mind of the Muslim and enjoy the Benevolence of Allah must jealously guard against things that are harmful to the fast. Anger, which has so many harmful end products, is particularly harmful to our fast and should be curtailed or completely avoided (if you can). Allah (SWT) declared that “… the (faithful) servants of the Most Gracious (Allah) are those who walk on the earth in humility and somberness and when the foolish address them (with bad words) they reply back with mild words of gentleness.

The believer is advised to keep good companies always. This becomes more important in the month of Ramadan where he needs to protect the sanctity of his fast for Allah’s acceptance. To this, Allah cautions.

The Islamic Scholar advised Muslims to use the Fasting Period to cite the Holy Quoran, increase their number of supplementary prayers and give charity to the needy, the sick and the poor.

The Holy Quoran identifies eight persons who are qualified to receive alms. These Imam Iddrisu Alhassan mentioned included the needy, the poor in society, people who fight in the cause of Islam and people who use their entire lives to preach and guide others to good ways.

According to him, Islam means peace and submission to the will of Allah (God) and therefore if the name Islam means peace and we (Muslims) cannot settle minor disputes among ourselves then we are not Muslims.

Imam Iddrisu Alhassan urged Muslims especially the youth to abide by the teachings of the Holy Prophet Mohammed (Peace and Blessings Be upon Him) as He is the way to heaven.
