We lost a visionary
leader and a brother, Nelson Mandela.
Mandela's spoken word and powerful actions lead to the
ending of apartheid in South Africa. After a long
twenty-seven year in prison, he became the first black
South African president from 1994-1999.
After gaining incomprehensible attention from the
international community for being such a dominant
political figure, The Nelson Mandela Foundation was
created.
The vision and mission of this foundation
is to ensure a society which remembers its past, listens
to all its voices, and pursues, social justice.
A memorial was held for Nelson Mandela at the The House
of the Lord Church in Brooklyn. NY. The Rev. Dr. Herbert
Daughtry, veteran pastor and Civil Rights activist,
said, "We have arranged this memorial to coincide with
the funeral arrangements in South Africa, which will
start on Sunday, December 8, 2013 with prayer, and
conclude on Sunday, December 15, 2013. We know that
people everywhere want to come together and share their
sadness, appreciation, and gratitude for the life of
this extraordinary man.
Rev. Daughtry was a member of Mayor David Dinkins
delegation to South Africa in the early 1990s. He also
served on the welcoming committee when Mr. Mandela
visited New York in 1990. Rev. Daughtry has interacted
with Mr. Mandela on a number of occasions, which
included a reception for Mr. Mandela at the White House
during President William Clinton's tenure, ceremonies at
the Riverside Church and New York City Hall, etc.
It was also at the Reverend's
church that Mrs. Winnie Mandela made her first public
speech in the U.S.A during their visit.
Music was provide by internationally renowned jazz
artist, Mr. Randy Weston, and the Anointed Voices of The
House of the Lord Church.
Nelson Mandela's footprints will forever remain solid.
We shall always push forward.
Rest in Peace
Kobina Annan, Jr.
