I WELCOME COMPETITION, AKUFO-ADDO DECLARES

“I am not going to worry myself about people standing down or not. I welcome competition, I have always welcomed competition. The most important thing is that, on that day, October 18, the party must speak emphatically like the party spoke emphatically on August 31.”

These were the words of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Monday, September 8, 2014, when he met the 32 delegates from the Upper West Region, who voted in the Special Electoral College, to thank them for the 100% victory they gave him in the August 31 Special Electoral College. He expressed his profound gratitude for the great honour done him, which is why he made the Region his first point of call in his Thank You tour.

There have been calls making the rounds urging some candidates who contested that Special Electoral College to step down ahead of the October 18 poll, citing the margin of victory recorded by Nana Akufo-Addo as indicative of the choice of the party.

However, Nana Akufo-Addo told delegates of the party that he is solely focused on the October 18 presidential primary and will work hard to secure an emphatic margin of victory in the contest.

By this, Nana Akufo-Addo explained that “our opponents will know that the NPP is resolute. This is the way that we are going and we are determined to go that way. Nobody should have any doubt about it. The NPP is determined, united and focused.”

On the claim being made by some persons that the 780 delegates, who voted in the Special Electoral College, are not representative of the choice of the grassroots of the NPP, Nana Addo said that “I don’t know anyone who has a better connection to the grassroots than constituency chairmen. You are the people through whom the grassroots filter; you know what is going on in the grassroots.”

Nana Akufo-Addo recounted the declaration made by the constituency chairmen of the Region on August 2, 2014, when they assured Nana Akufo-Addo of their vote because the grassroots had charged them to vote for Nana.

“Not only did you make the promise, but you delivered. You will recollect that Sir John used the phrase ‘fear delegates.’ I will say ‘trust delegates’, especially when they act in the true sense of the word”, Akufo-Addo said.

Nana Addo told the delegates that the 100% endorsement given to him by the region was very special, as it came from the Region which had produced founding fathers of the party like S.D Dombo, B.K Adama, Jato Kaleo, Abaayifa Karbo and Mumuni Dimbie.

“I understand this vote in two ways. Firstly, the party is focused and is saying we want power. Secondly the vote signifies a party that is united. We are united and will fight to win election 2016. It is a statement Ghanaians must continue to hear. We are going to protect our vote, and ensure that the declaration that will be made will be right. The country needs an NPP government to restore Ghana back onto the path of progress and prosperity,” Nana Addo said.

He assured the delegates that he continues to be in politics because he believes he has something good for Ghana, assuring them “it is not for corruption, I am not coming to steal your money because I am not interested in that. Neither do I want to make money for myself or my family. I am in politics because I have a vision for this country, a vision that will help transform Ghana and bring prosperity to our people.” This was met with resounding cheers.

He assured the delegates that, when they repose confidence in him again, he will assemble a competent team to revitalise and sustain the Ghanaian economy, as opposed to the situation where the country is having to go for an IMF bailout, after mismanagement by the John Mahama led NDC government.

Insults have no place in politics

Nana Addo has bemoaned the use of insults by some personalities in the NPP as a means of scoring political points, explaining that those who insult always have usually nothing concrete to say.

“Let’s try and get the insults out of the way. Disagreements there may be, different opinions there can be, criticisms are normal. No problem with that. I am appealing to all of us to put insults out of our system. We do not want any insults anymore, so the party can remain wholesome and clean and work together for victory in 2016,” Nana Addo said.

Exchanges on Mother Tongue as tool for teaching basic grades

Commentary, Sept 08, Ghanadot - I am not averse to starting a child in a mother tongue. But which one is it going to be in a multi-tongue region? How do we effect comprehension in the chosen language, which may be as much a handicap to the child as the English? And since, ultimately we are coming back to the English anyway, don't you think this exercise will only be a detour?..... More
