Make your position known, CAN tells President Mahama

The Conservative Alliance Network (CAN) is calling on Ghana’s new President, John Dramani Mahama to make his position clear on the outcome of the petition filed by three leaders of the New Patriotic Party at the Supreme Court.

It will be recalled that the NPP is at the Supreme Court contesting the Electoral Commission’s declaration of President John Mahama as winner of the 2012 presidential election.

The petition has the 2012 Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, his running mate, and Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, NPP party Chairman, as plaintiffs.

According to the plaintiffs, irregularities recorded during the elections favored the NDC, noting that 24,000 of the pink result sheets from some polling stations indicated that those irregularities were enough to affect the results. The two respondents in the petition are the Electoral Commission and President John Dramani Mahama.

In a statement signed in Accra by Mr. Anthony Abotsi, Patriot Faisal Ibrahim and Edem Agudogo, they challenged the President to make his position public on “the verdict of the Supreme Court no matter the outcome”.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said that it will respect the verdict of the Supreme Court regarding its challenge of the outcome of the December 7 elections no matter what the outcome.

The group said they recognized the constitutional obligation placed on every Ghanaian, especially the President to accept the verdict of the highest court of the land on such matters, but “so far the President has remained silent on such a critical matter”, a development the group said it is “worrying” and sending the “wrong signals”.
