Mr Samuel Salifu Mogre, the Director of Non-Formal
Education Division of the Ministry of Education has
described as alarming the national illiteracy rate
which is estimated at 38.3 per cent.
The increase in the illiteracy rate he said remain a
stumbling block for socio-economic development in
the country and has called on all stakeholders to
double their efforts in reducing the figure to a
single digit within the shortest possible time.
Mr Mogre in a statement issued in Accra as Ghana
marks International Literary Day today urged all
stakeholders of literacy not to relent but to
continue to strive to ensure the reduction of
illiteracy to single digits in the not too distant
future.
He said, illiteracy was no respecter of persons,
communities and nations and its striking effects
could be seen wherever it shows its ugly head.
"Illiteracy is the main cause for ignorance,
poverty, disease and underdevelopment and the
nations that bear the brunt of illiteracy have often
shown visible signs of underdevelopment", he said in
the statement.
The International Literary Day was the day set aside
by the United Nations (UN) to sensitise the world to
the problem and challenges that illiteracy posed to
the personal growth and the development of nations.
This year's celebrations was under the theme
"Functional literacy, key to national participation,
good citizenship and social development".
