The decongestion exercise has taken off despite the
criticisms from government officials and politicians.
Though they described the decongesting exercise of the
capital as a political toxic thing to do, the Accra
Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has this morning pulled down
numerous unauthorized structures along the streets of
Central Business District of Accra as part of moves to
decongest the city.
According to the traders, this move by the A.M.A. is sudden
as they could not prepare adequately to relocate before the
exercise.
“If I know the AMA will be here today, I wouldn’t have shown
up at all to sell today. Now I’m left with nothing. This is
a surprise to me; I was not really expecting this today.”
One of them told Ghanadot.
According them, though they were aware of the impending
exercise; “we thought it will happen at the end of the year”
a trader remarked, and wondered as bread winners, where
would they get money to feed their families at this
“difficult moment”.
“I am finished; this work is what feeds me and my family,
now that I am jobless, what would become of my children? A
biscuit seller asked.
Though the mood of the traders looked grievous and
depressing, officials did not let that worry them as they
carried out with the exercise.
Hawkers were found loitering about and some in groups
discussing the exercise.
Some traders who could not stand the pressure attacked
President Mills for failing to honour his campaign promise.
“When President Mills promised us of “putting money in our
pockets”, he was rather making fun of us and deceiving us to
vote for him, now look at us”.
At the time of leaving the place, security personnel have
secured the area to maintain peace and order.
