Education Ministry: NAGRAT strike not necessary

Accra, Nov 25, Ghanadot - The Education Ministry has expressed
utter surprise over threats of strike by the National
Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT).
Public Relations Officer of the Ministry, Paul Krampah speaking
on Joy FM said he is at a loss as to why the Association will
take such a decision.
NAGRAT cites among other things, the lowering conditions of
service for teachers, accusing GES of slashing their monthly
responsibility allowance from GH 1.00 to 30 Gp and their car
maintenance allowance from GH 40.00 to GH7.00.
NAGRAT has served notice members will lay down their tools on
November 30, 2009 after a one month ultimatum for government to
address their grievances expired.
The decision to embark on the industrial action was taken at a
meeting of the association in Sunyani at the weekend, following
which the National Council directed its members to lay down
their tools with effect from Monday. They have also been
directed not to participate in any official duties from the date
of the strike.
The teachers' action comes one week ahead of the first-term
examinations of most senior high schools in the country.
The President of NAGRAT, Mr. Kwame Alorvi, disclosed that the
association had given notice of its intended strike to the
Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES)
after several unsuccessful efforts to get issues related to
teachers' conditions of service resolved.
