The event will be followed
a day later by another on the topic of AIDS to highlight the
efforts of those in support of eradicating the plague.
The African liberation Day
celebration holds particular
significance this year because the United Nations General
Assembly has proclaimed 2011 as International Year for
People of African Decent. The theme for this year's event
is: Forging closer links between Africa and the Diaspora.
"Coming one week before the United Nations 2011 High Level
Meeting on AIDS which is being held in the broader framework
of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015, this day offers
a major platform to galvanize Africa, the Diaspora and the
international community around the twin engine of assessing
the work that has been achieved in the past 30 years of the
AIDS epidemic and re-committing the international community
to global solidarity and partnership building to move the
AIDS agenda forward," said Dr. Djbril Diallo, Chairman of
the Host Committee for the Africa Day Celebration and Senior
Advisor to the Executive Direcctor of UNAIDS,
about the coming event.
AIDS in Africa kills more people daily than
all the conflicts
Africa is famous for. International attention has
been given to the epidemic to
support the ongoing
effort so stop the plague.
In
some countries, thousands of babies are sadly born with the
disease which makes its difficult for
them attain healthy lifedtyle, like reproducing, when
they reach adulthood.
"The
AIDS epidemic is a very essential topic that needs worldwide
attention. Whether we are touched by this disease directly
or indirectly, it affects us all in a fast growing global
world," said an observer responding to
the news on the coming event.
"It is imperative that AIDS in
Africa is soon brought under control. If not it is sad to
say that this disease will continue to plague the continent
for many years to come and cause a decline in the population
of our people." Another colleague added.

by the National Conference of Black Mayors, Constituency for
Africa, United African Congress, the Institute of the Black
World 21st Century, World African Diaspora Union, Give Them
